Subject: Career as a Materials/Industrial productivity Management consultant

Date: 25-Jan-2002
Question: Dear Counsel,
I am working as Senior Manager (Vendor Development) with an Automobile Ancilliary unit(a B class company).

In academics, I hold B.E.-Mech.Engg., B.E.-Prodn.Engg.(both from Institution of Engineers India, Calcutta), Graduate Diploma in Materials Management(I.I.M.M.) & 4 years Diploma in Tool & Die Making(T.R.T.C.,Delhi). I have a professional experience of 9 years plus.

My peculiar family & certain other constraints have forced me since last 9 years for not to undertake any Masters Programme in Management/Technology Management, full or part time. Since I love being in touch with academics continually, I thought it prudent to gain knowledge horizontally & have recently started undertaking Graduateship examination in Industrial Engineering form I.I.I.E.,Mumbai.

Although I am quite confident & have had a steep professional recognition so far, I apprehend that not possesing a Managerial Degree can deprive me for being considered for Top Slot assignments with A class companies. I am also not in a position to go for any part time or full time course or leave my job. I look forward for a possible solution or validation whether my apprehension has substance or just a face of fear to loose success ? As a long term carreer plan, I aspire to become a Materials/Industrial productivity Management consultant.

Regards,

Answer: Dear Chanderkant,
You hold a lot of valuable experience of 9+ years in the industry along with a sound academic record. I feel that you are well positioned to acheive your aspiration of becoming a management consultant.

Although it is definitely a plus point to have a professional degree in the area of management, however it is not necessary. Real life experience teaches much more than just theoritical knowledge.

You can hone up your management skills by reading books whenever you find time, and if you realize that you are lacking in certain ways, make a conscious effort to imbibe those skills in yourself.

Make a resume and apply in some A class companies. During the interview process, you will come to know the expectations of the companies and where you stand in reference to that. You are confident enough and i am sure that you will make it.

Wish you good luck
