Subject: Career prospects of BE(Electronics)+Computers
Date: 17-Jan-2002
Question: I am doing my Engineering course(Electronics) from shivaji university. I am in my 2'nd year. I am planing to give the entrance for CDAC(Centre for Development of Advance Computing) after my engg. course. I want to make a career in which both my engg. and software knowledge will come into use. Please let me know, will this kind of mixing of totaly different fields will help me in the real world. I am basically more interested in programming(C++) which I have discovered recently. Could you please give me more information about similar institutions as CDAC.

Answer: Dear Aninda,
You are planning in the right direction. You can take up a course right away to get yourself more focussed in the area of software development. I would suggest, if you have computer science department, you may either opt for switching to Computer Sciences for your engineering or talk to your HOD of computer science department telling your interest and letting you take some courses or let you sit through the classes of some of the computer science courses.

There are various institutes also which offer short term and long term courses. The choice of the institute however is not so critical as the amount of effort which you put in yourself by reading books and practicing program writing. C++ is a good choice. You should see where your interest lies where you can use your C++ skills. Is it in systems programming, application programming, database programming or GUI development and try to take up some short term projects along with your engineering, in the identified area. If you have campus interviews where software companies come, you can approach them to let you take tests/interviews at campus or you can approach them directly highlighting your interests and skills in software.

If you work hard and learn fast, getting a good software job, right from the campus, should be easy. Wish you all the best.

Your counsel.
