Subject: Career prospects for sales & marketing guy
Date: 14-Jan-2002
Question: Respected Sir,
I am Neeraj, working with a public limited company as PRO. My job profile involves liaisoning with govt and other organisations, doing customer service functions, etc. but I am not directly involved in marketing or sales line . You can say I am acting as coordinator with doing all above mentioned jobs. I am having 6 years experience in the current assignment and before that I was in direct and dealer network sales in office automation.

I am a graduate in Commerce plus I have done one year post graduate diploma in Marketing and public relation also. I am proficient in operational knowledge in MS Office and Internet, email etc.

My question is I am totally confused at the moment where to head as there seems to be no future prospect in liaisoning and customer service. Now a days there is lot of demand of e-comm professional and in future it will grow. Can I do this course in marketing and be known as e-comm professional, thus I can enter in the line which will be always in demand in future also.

Please suggest me at the earliest the possibility and productivity of the above mentioned course as per the skill , educations and experience is concerned and if no then guide me also.

Answer: Dear Neeraj,
You are absolutely right in understanding the current trend and shift towards Internet as the medium for all future transactions. Internet is a lot different from the print and audio-visual medium of promotions. With Internet boom a lot more sales of products are happening thru e-commerce channel, and this will only increase every day. Therefore, the need for product marketing through the web is going to be essential to promote the product. So if you have an aptitude for marketing, it makes a lot of sense for you to imbibe the awareness of internet and web.

I would suggest that you undertake some basic course in Internet and e-commerce, which gives you a broader understanding of the field rather than in depth knowledge. Then you can identify companies who are ready to sell and service their products through Internet. Most prominent of them are software and their support centers. You can approach them directly and with a combination of your past strengths of customer support and public relations and with the knowledge of web, internet and e-commerce, you should be able to carve a niche for yourself. All the best.

Your counsel.
