Subject: Career shift to Software
Date: 23-Jan-2002
Question: Respected Sir,

I am basically a mechanical engineer having done my M.E. in Thermal Power engineering from REC Trichy. I am presently working in a private sector company in proposal engineering department for last five years.

I have been trained in USA in design of PC fired boilers. I am also involved in various developmental activities with in the company. I have cleared MicroSoft SQL Server 6.5 in 1999. I have also created few programs using VB and MS access. I know MS Excel very well.

I am now 30 years old. I am very much interested in shifting my career to software field. Can you kindly advice whether it is possible to shift my career now? How should I go about it? Can you suggest few companies.

Thanking you very much,

Yours sincerely,

Giridhar

Answer: Dear Giridhar,
It is never too late, if you are really keen and focussed it is possible for you to get into the software industry.

You need to keep practising the programming skills that you have acquired. You can take up small software applications as projects on your own first and work on them along with your present job. Read more books and broaden your knowledge base.

Then you can apply to various companies looking for SQL application programmers. You can search our site CareerAge for jobs in the areas of your interest. We will send you daily job notifications by email if you sign up the individual membership on our site at Individual Membership

All the best.

Your counsel.
