Subject: Merchant Navy for B.Tech Electronics and Communication engineers
Date: 24-Aug-2008
Question: I joined MERI Kolkata but later I left it and rather joined electronics and communication engineering.

I always want to be in merchant navy. Is it now possible for me join merchant navy at approx the same level as i would have joined it if i would have completed my degree from MERI Kolkata. If possible please tell me the procedure.

Answer: You can apply for the post of a Radio Officer or an Electronics Officer now. Radio Officers and Electronic Officers are part and parcel of a modern ship. Operation, repair and maintenance of radio and the electronic communication equipment, radar and other navigational aids are the basic functions of the Radio officers. In a nutshell, they are basically assigned with the task of supervising the vessel's operation and communication system. The ever changing technology has necessitated the indispensability of highly qualified personnel who possess the required knowledge of electronics and automation. There are two categories of entries in this regard.

(i) Radio Officers cum Electronic officers: To be qualified for the above mentioned position, one has to be Radio Officer and his designation should be authenticated by a Certificate of Proficiency by the Ministry of Telecommunication. Next, he must enrol himself in a 3-month course at an I1T (which offers such course) to qualify as Electronic officers.

(ii) Electrical/Electronic Engineering Degree holders. These candidates can undergo the same course and qualify as electronic officer.

All the best
