Subject: On shore opportunities in Merchant Navy
Date: 2-Sep-2008
Question: I have done sailing of 10 months as assistant engineer officer in a LPG carrier. I am about to give my MEO Class IV exams to become 4th engineer. my question is "I dont want to sail for more than 2 years. what are on shore opportunites in Merchant Navy"
Answer: Those who have worked for Merchant Navy, On ship or on shore, they are in demand by the Shipping industry. Many multi-national ship management firms look for Indian masters for the shore jobs. Ship management is a new concept where a few companies run the show by hiring professionals with core expertise. Today most ship owners let out their vessels to such companies to run the show. The ship management firms in turn hire the experienced captains and chief engineers to operate on shore jobs like logistics, chartering and operations.

Experienced officers are in demand for both on-shore and off-shore positions, with shipping companies, port authorities and other employers in administrative posts with shipping and oil companies and in other posts where sea experience is relevant.

Hope that helps
