Subject: Higher studies after B.Tech.(Electrical Engg.)
Date: 29-Sep-2007
Question: Hi, This is Sneha, passed B.Tech.(Electrical Engineering) in 2005 & presently working in a leading MNC as software engineer(datawarehousing) for one and half years.

Though I want to go for service for some more years but I am thinking to complete my master degree now as I am interested to do Ph.d later. But I am really confused whether I should go for M.Tech/MBA. Personally, I'm not interested to do MBA. But if it is M.Tech, whether should I go for Electrical again/Software/any other specialization?I have already forgotten Electrical subjects and many of the basic subjects in software are very new to me. If I go for other specialization, what it should be?

After two years from now (after completion of master degree), Is it possible for me again to join IT industry as experienced professional? How will be the software market then?

We are eligible to do MS in Software Engg.(correspondence)from a reputated institution from our company. Will correspondence course create a problem to have Ph.d later in India or abroad?

Is there any scope to do have Ph.d in Business Administration?

Thanks,
Sneha

Answer: Dear Sneha,

You need to decide first as to what is your Aim behind doing a Ph.D? Is it just that you want to do it for the sake of it or you want to get into the Academic or Research oriented field? As you are already clear that you are not interested in MBA then for whatever reason you are thinking of doing the Ph.D, MBA will not help you. If you are looking for options in Electrical/Software, It would definitely be better to opt for IT because no matter even if you have done Electrical and whether you remember some portions or not that knowledge is already existing but if you go for IT you might learn some new things altogether and that would give you the impetus. Later, if you decide to go for anything further it would definitely help you and there's always a comeback to the IT sector as an experienced person. Regular course is anytime better and has more weightage if you are thinking of pursuing Ph.D later.

You may also consider doing an integrated Ph.D which awards MS or M.Tech degree.

If you plan to do it by correspondence, you may consider joining MS program from BITS Pilani.

Hope that helps.
