Subject: Should I go for MBA or do a Call Center job after B.Com?
Date: 19-Jan-2003
Question: Dear Sir/Madam,
I have done B.Com and A-level and CDAC Computer course. I did some teaching jobs for about 1 year as no s/w development job was forthcoming. Then I dropped once to do MBA. but did not get admission into a good institute. now, should I join a 2nd grade MBA institute or join a Call Centre and try again. Thank you.
Answer:

B.Com with computers combination does not bring in many openings. If you are creative, you may look at multimedia work or some kind of office automation work. The paradox is that such work does not bring very good return to the business owner so the salaries are not good. The high end software development is competitive and the best jobs go to Engineers from best colleges. And then gradienting down, to MCAs etc. B.Com with computers is way down in the list. So what do you do.

Call centres is a good option. But the job may not be for many years to come. Working in shifts is fun when you are young.

I would put my bets on MBA. I do not know what you mean by 2nd grade MBA institute. You should look at the placements that the previous batch (This year, and not couple of years back). If this is good, go for the college. Remember, the moment an MBA steps out of the campus, without a job off the campus, he joins the unemployed lot. Those who walk out of campus with a job, do make a dent in their lives. The campusses who are influential in the corporates, are the ones that are to be sought after. Look at these and decide your life's course.
