Subject: Some Interview Tips
Date: 12-Jan-2003
Question: Dear Sir/Madam,
Whenever I attended an interview, the first question was to me "Tell something about yourself". I just answer but till date cann't find any satisfying answer for it. Can you give me some worthful hints so that I can gain some information. Thank you.
Answer:

It is a good question.

Actually the interviewer wants to relax the atmosphere. Secondly, there are so many candidates, so it is best for the candidate to tell about himself so that it sets the pace of the interview.

There are two ways to answer this question: Start with educational background and then come to the professional from first job onwards.

Best is to speak about the education quickly, highlighting merits and achievements. Then come to your latest job and the skills. Mention other major skills with experience competency. Mention more details. As you go back, reduce the words and emphasis. All this should be over in two to three minutes.

Keep your voice well modulated. Not too loud nor too low. Maintain adequate eye contact, but do not stare. Relax. And be comfortable.

Be very brief and make sure you do not go on a tangent: For example:

I studied in school xyz and did science subjects. My favorite subject was Physics. The best part in this was an experiment on spectrometry. A spectrometer is ....

If there is an achievement, highlight in resume and make a passing remark only. Go in to details only if asked for.

Your counsel.
