Subject: PG options - M.Tech /MBA after B.E.
Date: 6-Feb-2003
Question: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am 32 years of age and have completed my B.E.(Electronics Engg.) in August - 1993. I have work experience of 10+ years in the field of Industrial Automation working for various MNC's in India in Engineering design and Projects Execution. Recently however my career has started stagnating with no further growth opportunities in sight. I desperately long to make a career shift to put my career back on the growth path. After doing some analysis, I have come to a conclusion that to advance my career further a good PG degree would be of immense help.
Considering the fact that I have substantial work experience in Engineering design and Project execution, which PG Degree - Mtech /MBA do you feel will best suit my career profile ?

What will be my job prospects after completing the PG course - either Mtech /MBA ? Do I have to join at the entry level again or will I get an advanced placement considering the years of experience that I have. Thank you.
Answer:

I am finding a tendency amongst employers. Too much experience is adding to two things 1) Age, 2) Cost of hiring. The experienced take more salary, are less energetic. While there is no proven theorem that links experience with productivity, people are generally looking at buzz words 'get younger people'. Especially when the employers' offsprings take on the reigns.

In my view, you should look at MBA, part time. M.Tech is not going to add to your knowledge. In fact, Industry technology is far ahead of what they teach you in M.Tech. Unless, you are doing M.Tech abroad, in which case, M.Tech makes more sense.
