Subject: Guidance choosing the right area in Networking
Date: 31-Jan-2003
Question: Dear Sir/Madam,
I am M.Sudhakar. I completed MCA in 2002. I am working as System-Engineer in a Software company in Bangalore. My job is maintaining LAN network, hardware problems and mostly related to technical support. I know windows NT,2000, Configuring CISCO devices, Hardware & Troubleshooting, LAN, WAN, C, C++, Java, HTML, SQL, Server & Network Management. But I not interested to continue my career in a normal physical networking. I want my career in the latest trend in the higher-end Networking. As you know well, networking is now lot of classifications and there are lot of specialized areas.

I have planned to switchover to someother new area in Networking, so for that I planned to learn some new courses in networking but I have some confusions in choosing the area in the Networking. I don't know which specialized area I should learn. As you know, the requirement for Networking professionals are changing every day in India. New methodology and technologies are introduced daily in the field of networking. So I want to know which area in the Networking I should concentrate and learn.

Sir,I need your guidance choosing the right area in Networking. I want to know which area in the Networking will have good scope of job opportunities in the near future and where I can get right education for it(Preferably in Bangalore). If there is any job-oriented course in such areas, please inform me. I am looking for your  guidancein your reply at the eearliest Thank you.
Answer:

Netwoking courses are short in duration. It is always best to look at what is hot. Look up the job announcements on three Web sites in areas of Netwoking and note the key skills / certifications they are looking for. If you have adequate qualifications, apply, or you know what course to do. The skill fad changes over night. And one will end up in a goose chase. By the time you catch one, the tech is too old. So where do you go from here.

Look at the technical skill enhancement requirements in your own company. And perhaps learn at their cost and also contribute there on. The problem with internal netwoking people is that while their strengths get recognized, the weaknesses too. The key people if they keep having network problems, their impressions are poor. So, give that extra bit of care and also do routine and regular checks so that every thing is up and running. In todays scenario, do not look for job changes.
