Subject: Choosing a career in Arts.
Date: 14-Mar-2008
Question: My daughter is appearing ICSE X boards exams. She is not very good in Science subjects. She is more comfortable with the Arts subjects.

Please suggest a career with job opportunities in India and abroad as well (except teaching) which she can pursue if she takes some Arts subjects like psychology etc. which will easier for her.
Thanks

Answer: There is nothing achieved easily and if your daughter is not good in her science subjects, I commend you for not forcing her to take up science in 12th! Believe me, very few parents do that.

As for psychology is concerned, she can opt for it in class 12th, if her school offers or else take it up at the undergraduate level-this is just the beginning. After that she would have to go for her Master's where she would specialize in her particular field of interest which range from Clinical psychology/ Industrial/ Educational/ Child psychology/ Social psychology/ Abnormal psychology/ Rehabilitation psychology/ Applied psychology/ Counseling psychology etc.
Then she goes on to super specialize in the field with an M.Phil/Ph.D.

Your daughter can also opt for other subjects in Humanities/Commerce and appear for other entrance exams. As for jobs abroad, there are opportunities in every field and you would be surprised to know the growing demand for Indian teachers and rehab professionals in US and Canada!

All the best for your daughter!
