Answer: Microbiology is the study of micro organisms, including viruses, prokaryotes and simple eukaryotes. Today, most of the work done in microbiology is done using methods from biochemistry and genetics. It is also related to pathology, immunology and epidemiology as many micro organisms are pathogens.
Medical microbiology, on the other hand, is a branch of microbiology which deals with the study of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites which are of medical importance and are capable of causing diseases in human beings. It includes the study of microbial pathogenesis and epidemiology and is related to the study of disease pathology and immunology. In the medical laboratory, these microbiologists are often medical technologists and they also work in a subdepartment dedicated to parasitology.
If you feel you are better of as a researcher then go for the former and if the medical field interests you, go for the latter.
Hope that helps.
