Ask a Question

Subject: how to become a copy editor
Date: 11-Oct-2007
Question: I am a third year B.Com student. I wish to become a copy editor but am unable to find any suitable courses for the same.

Kindly advise.

Answer: Copy editing is the editorial work that an editor does to make formatting changes and improvements to a manuscript. They are responsible for editing, rewriting and trimming the stories submitted by correspondents or reporters without compromising on adequacy and effectiveness of the information. To become a copy editor you need to have a flair for the language and a keen observer and analyst. One can do a Bachelor's in Journalism or Mass Communication and follow it with postgraduate qualifications. There are many institutes that offer courses in Journalism/Mass Communication but the premier ones are:

  • Indian Institute of Mass Communication(IIMC,New Delhi)
  • Jamia Millia Islamia,New Delhi
  • St.Xavier's Institute of Communication,Mumbai
  • Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication,Pune

Hope that helps.
