Subject: Want to counsel students.
Date: 22-Mar-2008
Question: I have done my B.A and B.Ed but I would like to go in for counseling students. I have worked as a teacher and found that more than teaching, children need emotional support and need a lot of understanding of their problems. I have studied educational psychology as one of the subjects in B.Ed. What should I do now to qualify to become a counselor?
Answer: To become a professional counselor, one needs to study Psychology for higher education. There is a certificate course in guidance and counseling offered by IGNOU. NCERT and the regional SCERT's also offer counseling programmes to teachers on deputation. It would be good if you could take up a master's in psychology first and then specialize in counseling. Annamalai University offers an M.Sc in Applied Psychology through the distance mode.
