Date: 29-Jun-2008
Question: hello sir,

plz tell me that im elligible for gate exam? im studying in 4 yr of agricultural biotechnology.our degree programme is of four years but we are getting degree b.sc in agricultural biotechnology..plz plz help me out as i want to start my gate preparations.

Answer: The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear in GATE.
  1. Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy (all courses have to be of 4 years after 10+2) and those who are in pre final year of such programmes.
  2. Master’s degree holder in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statics/Computer application or equivalent and those are in final or pre-final year of such programmes.
  3. Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master’s degree programme (Post-B.Sc) in Engineering/Technology or in the third or higher year of Five–year Integrated Master’s degree programme and dual degree programme in Engineering/Technology.

Eligibility for admission to M.Tech degree is B.Tech/M.Sc in the discipline. You can find eligibility requirements for various M.Tech programmes from the following links.

    (i) http://gate.iitkgp.ac.in/mtech/eara.html
    (ii) http://gate.iitkgp.ac.in/mtech/table2.htm
    (iii) http://gate.iitkgp.ac.in/mtech/table1.htm
    (iv) http://gate.iitkgp.ac.in/mtech/table4.htm

Eligibility for Admission to various branches of M. Tech (Agricultural Engineering) Degree are:

    1. Soil and Water Engineering -Bachelor degree in Agril. Engineering / Civil Engineering
    2. Farm Machinery and Power-Bachelor degree in Agril. Engineering / Mechanical Engineering
    3. Agricultural Process and Food Engineering-Bachelor degree in Agril. Engineering / Chemical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering/ Electrical Engineering
    4. Renewable EnergyManagement -Bachelor degree in Agril. Engineering / Mechanical Engineering/ Electrical Engineering

For GATE eligibility requirement is Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy (which has to be of 4 years) and not B.Sc., but you can just confirm from the institute where you are looking for admission.

Since most of these institutes also provide M.Sc Agriculture and M.Sc Life Science course, so you can try for M.Sc Ag/ Life Science. And then can purse PhD in any of the agriculture related fields. For PhD eligibility is post graduate degree M.Sc or M.Tech in the related field.
