Subject: Choosing stream
Date: 6-May-2008
Question: I HAVE JUST GIVEN MY TENTH BOARDS AND NOW I AM CONFUSED THAT WHAT STREAM TO CHOOSE. I HAVE QUALIFIED TWO SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH TESTS i.e

1. I HAVE BEEN THE SCHOOL TOPPER IN THE YOUNG SCIENTIST TALENT SEARCH ORGANISED BY SRI CHAITANYA EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY AND UNI GLOBAL TECHNOLOGIES IN JOINT VENTURE

2. SELECTED IN THE T.I.M.E AQUA REGIA CONTEST.

I HAVE A GREAT INTEREST IN BIOLOGY AND ALSO HAVE GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS. I STAND OUT THE MOST DISTINCTLY IN MY CLASS AND HAVE A GREAT INDIVIDUAL EXPRESSION POWER. SOMETIMES I THINK THAT I SHOULD GO FOR THE MEDICAL STREAM BUT MY PARENTS DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH FUNDS SO YHAT THEY COULD ENABLE ME TO GO FOR ANY COURSE IN MEDICAL. MY TEACHER AND PARENTS ARE ASKING ME TO GO FOR COMMERCE BECAUSE IT IS MORE EASIER TO ACHIEVE GOOD MARKS IN COMMERCE AS COMPARED TO MEDICAL AND COURSES IN COMMERCE ARE MORE EASIER TO AFFORD. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT ANY SUCH COURSE IN WHICH INVESTMENT IS LESS AND RETURNS ARE MORE OR SHOULD I GO FOR COMMERCE AND LATER ECONOMICS HONOURS? IF YOU ARE SAYING YES FOR COMMERCE THEN PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT THE JOB SCOPE IN ECONOMICS HONOURS AND THE SALARY BAR

Answer: Congratulations for such a feat at this age! You seem to be an above average student and passionate about medicine. Also you have good verbal skills which are an absolute necessity for a good medical practioner.

There are banks [SBI being one of them] that give you study loans for professional courses at a nominal interest rate and are typically payable after you start earning. Also there is a possibility of getting scholarship during your medicine course from the institute. Also there are lot of private trusts who provide study scholarships-cum-loan. Check out for yourself if you can afford medicine after that and then go for the next option-commerce.

You could take up a BBS(Bachelor of Business Studies from Shaheed Sukhdev College in Delhi) which is at par with most of the good MBA's. Whatever you do try doing it from a reputed institute.

Last but not the least, do what you find your passion is. Make that your goal and you'll find the way

All the best!
