Subject: Career goals - In five years?
Date: 21-Apr-2002
Question: Dear Sir/Madam,
I was asked in an interview that where do you want yourself to be after five years? but the answer I gave did not satisfy the manager taking the interview. So, please respond my query.
Answer: I wish you had also written what answer did you give.

Actually the person is trying to understand your vision of your own career.

If you are fresh, then you will be learning the job first and then grow. It is reasonable for a trainee to expect to be in supervisory or managerial grade after five years in the responsibility charts. Again, growth will depend on size and scope of the company. Five years is long period.

If you join at management level, you should be in senior management in that period.

Your counsel.
