Human Resources Management is a profession. The goals are to attract, socialize, motivate, maintain and retain an organizations employees. Human Resources Management requires an understanding of organization and human behavior, and the practices and policies which lead to a skilled and motivated workforce. The Certificate in Human Resources Management (HRM, HURS) is designed for students who wish to work in this profession. You could pursue a career as a recruiter, trainer, compensation officer, or as an HR generalist.

Human Resources Management Certificate (24 credits):
a) Core Requirements:
AK/ADMS 1500 3.0 Introduction to Finance and Accounting *
AK/ADMS 2400 3.0 Organizational Behaviour
AK/ADMS 2600 3.0 Human Resources Management (formerly AK/ADMS 3480 3.0)

AK/ADMS 3490 3.0 Compensation

*NOTE: The Human Resources Professionals Association requires AK/ADMS 1500 3.0 or BOTH AK/ADMS 2500 3.0 AND AK/ADMS 2510, in order to meet their academic requirements.

b) Prerequisites for core requirements: AK/ADMS 1000 3.0 (waived for students with a degree)

The prerequisite of AK/ECON 1000 3.0 for AK/ECON 3610 3.0 is waived for Human Resource Management certificate students.

Becoming a CHRP (Certified Human Resource Professional) Becoming a CHRP (Certified Human Resource Professional)

All eight courses (24 credits) in the York Certificate have been approved by the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario (HRPAO) for accreditation towards the academic component of the designation Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP). While completing the academic courses, students are encouraged to join HRPAO, write the comprehensive exams, obtain work experience, and ultimately apply for the designation. The CHRP is recognized across Canada.

There are two ways to complete a certificate in Human Resources Management: 1) Part time /evening (HURS): Most courses are offered in the late afternoon (4-7pm) and evening time slots (7-10pm). Some are offered in a distance education format: either on the net or through correspondence.

York Students who wish to pursue the part time HURS certificate concurrently with their degree must fulfill the certificate and degree requirements upon graduation. Students will declare the certificate program on their application to graduate.

2) Full time/day(HRM): This certificate may be taken during the day over two terms. Students who have completed 84 credits at York or hold a university degree, by June 1 of the year in which they hope to enter the program, may apply to enroll in this intensive day time stream.

Applicants must have an overall grade point average of C. Successful admission will be based on the applicants grade point average and relevant work experience. Students who are accepted this program will be required to complete the 8 courses (24 credits) over two terms (Fall/Winter 2001) on a predetermined schedule as specified by the School of Administrative Studies. Students who are applying for this full time/day certificate would apply through admissions.

York Students who have completed at least 84 credits or hold a university degree and are pursuing the full time/day (HRM) certificate concurrently with their degree may submit their application along with the supplemental information of relative work experience to the School of Administrative Studies by June 1/01. Decisions on acceptance to the program will be made by the designate of the Dean of Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies (normally the coordinator of the Certificate).
