Subject: scope in iaf as an engineer
Date: 5-Sep-2007
Question: Sir/Mam, i'am 19 years old, and pursuing a b.tech degree from ggsipu, delhi in electronics and communication engg. I've always been attracted towards the aviation. After completing my degree in 2009, i want to join iaf, but i am not sure of what higher educational qualifications i can go for, after i enter into indian air force. i want to pursue a degree from abroad in aeronautics, like getting M.S.in fields related to aviation, so sir/mam, my question is: 1).Can i go for a higher educational qualifications from abroad(us, uk etc) universities after i get into iaf as a officer in technical branch? 2).Is their any leave provided for the same?
Answer: Aeronautical engineering and electronics and communication are two different fields. You would get entry into the Technical Branch of IAF with your qualification. While the duty of the aeronautical engineers is to ensure proper maintenance of all aircraft, the electronics deptt. looks into the communication, electronics and signals.

You can go for a higher education abroad provided you fulfil their eligibility criteria.

The provision for a sabbatical depends entirely on your commissioning and the IAF. IAF and other armed forces nominate candidates for higher studies typically in top Indian Universities and IITs, which you can consider.
