Subject: Guidance about Carrier for Hardware and Networking Diploma Holder
Date: 10-Dec-2002
Question: Dear Sir/Madam,
I completed my H.S.C. in Science, & side by side I completed my Computer Hardware & Networking Diploma course from Jetking Institute Thane. From Last 4 Year I'm doing job. But there is no scope for Computer Hardware Engineer, & salary is not good (4000 To 6000 RS. only). These days market is down, I want to make carrier, but because of communication problem I'm not able to decide which side I can go, I completed my study from Marathi Medium, that's why Communication problem is still. Please suggest the best side to make carrier in computer field or other field, I need your help. Thank you.
Answer: Your salary will grow with your skills only. Also, you will be able to keep your job only if you are good at it. If you do not study, your knowledge will become obsolete. Then maintaining your present job will become a problem, what to talk of better opportunities elsewhere. Employers always keep evaluating the employees worth vis a vis the output that they produce and also what new fresh blood from outside can do for them. So before changing your job, please try to retain it.

Your communication is weak. But only hard work will help you. Improve your written communication. Check the spellings before your mail goes out. For example, the one you wrote to me can be improved a lot. One last bit of serious advice, please, please, please do make good relation ships. Never ever loose temper in your work place. One burst will kill all the good will. Always be helpful. And say that with a smile.

In a company, it is not only your superiors comments that get you promotions and salary increases. Your work is evaluated by each customer. Most sophisticated equipment is used by seniors. Read the instruction material thoroughly before you touch the hardware. Keep yourself well informed. Also keep good relations with friends in your trade and discuss technical issues.

In my view, skill is more important and needs first attention. Once you have attained excellence in skills, you can concentrate on improving communication skills. You can do both alongside too, but being technically sound is first essential.

Your counsel.
