Subject: Break in Career Finance to IT
Date: 29-Dec-2002

|
Question: Dear Sir/Madam,
- I have done my MBA (66%) in Finance way back in 1984; I worked for
Maharashtra State Financial Corporation for 18 years. I joined as an Assistant
in 1985. I got selected for promotion to Officers post in 1992. But due
to Govt./Administrative Polices no order was issued. Then I took up the
matter with our MD in 1999, and he ordered for re-interviews. Again I got
selected for said post 2001. But again due to aforesaid policies in new
perspective no order was issued till date. (Please believe me, I have with
me all selection procedure written documents and selection orders signed
by CEO)
- In view of the stated experience, and since I could not change the
circumstances, I decided to have career break by equipping myself appropriately.
- Accordingly while doing the present job, I pursued the MCA from IGNOU
and its last semester result is expected in Mar 2003. My score up to 5th
sem is 69%.
- I have taken decision to resign the Job now.(Which is irrevocable)
- My age is 41 and have two kids.
Whether my career decision was appropriate? What career options you
will suggest me? Any short-term course will help me getting the job in IT?
Whether my experience will augment my qualification in computers if so in
what way? Thank you. |

Answer: Resigning from your job is not a solution. Believe me, job situation outside
is bad. Please remember, "HALF A LOAF IS BETTER THAN NONE". I know this
is against your wishes, but read the following with an open mind:
What I understand is that you have been denied the promotion that is validly
yours. There are a few recourses that you have:
- Contact your local politician. Discuss your case. And see what he
advises.
- There is a possibility of filing a lawsuit. Explore it with some
people you know. Confidentially. How? Say you are talking to a lawyer, then
tell him some thing as under:
"There is a person who is very in need of your help. This person is very
near and dear to me. (You are not telling a lie, because who else than yourself
can be so near and dear to you than your own self). Then state the situation.
Ask him what all can be done." You may ask for us for suggestions.
- Seek a transfer, if there are branches.
- There is another thing that may be happening: You may have become
very much depressed and obsessed about promotion and you must have discussed
this with all colleagues, your family and your friends. Sub consciously
your behavior may have become unacceptable for the higher position, where
one is not only expected to be technically competent but also emotionally
stable. One is expected to demonstrate certain maturity in decision-making.
- None of the above fears may be true, and there may be simple politicking.
But whatever the cause, result is that you are suffering. Unknowingly, this
suffering would be extended to those who are near you, in family, in office,
in the neighborhood. The problem may just be lying in your own self. We
cannot change the whole external world to fit to our designs. But we can
definitely control our own self. I am sure you are capable of that. Believe
me, if you stop chasing this point, take it out of your conscious and sub
conscious mind, do some Yoga and meditation, you will recover.
This is not defeat. This is bringing positive thoughts and energy in your
thoughts. There is a possibility that there may be some internal politics.
There are two things:
- One competence and,
- second is Attitude. While you will have excellent skills, you may
have, unknowingly developed negative and cynical approach towards your company,
your colleagues, your bosses. Tell me, do you have friends in company you
work for?
You need some rest. Check if you have leave. Plan a leave and take time
off. Confidentially meet a psychologist. She will help you recover your confidence,
regain positive thoughts. Get medication if required. It needs to be kept
confidential so that no one misuses that information against you. At forty,
if you lose a job, and do not get settled in to another one (Now a days
people are not preferring to hire persons more than forty) then your family
will get in to innumerable suffering. Have patience. Your selection proves
you are capable. Improve your interpersonal skills, relax, get to control
your temper. Things will improve. Don't compromise. Understand. And apply
"management of the situation" techniques. Intelligently. You will emerge
winner. Surely. You may look at training on PeopleSoft (Financials). This
could be a good option for you. There are companies that are looking at
PeopleSoft (or Oracle or SAP etc for that matter). The problem in this is
that training is costly. Then the salary may be equivalent to very in experienced
persons. If you can adjust to all that, you may give it a try. But resigning
NOW is no solution. You may take your job lightly; work hard for training
in ERPs that I have suggested. When fully trained, take a leap. Your life
will be more stable. If you have funds which you want to use to survive
(in the period in between the jobs) do not waste those funds. Secure them
in property or FD. So, solution is keep the job. Use any of the routes that
are suggested, or any other that makes better sense for your family. Finally,
