Subject: Career Guidance for Mechanical Engineering Student
Date: 16-May-2003
Question: Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Ramesh Sathe. I am 21 years old mechanical engineering student. My education has become my severe worry for me and it is trying to disturb my minds balance. Let me tell you in short,

I am born in a lower middle class family. I completed my H.S.C in Feb 2000 at first attempt. I spent 15 years of my life with I.A.S officer(My grandfather) that made me very ambitious. I always kept aim of being very intelligent and master in my field. I was and am naturally attracted towards science and dynamics. Although I got very less marks in the H.S.C I waited for one year and secured admission in the next year for mechanical engineering at L.T.C.E vashi. But in the mean year I completed neglected towards my studies and forgot every thing, I found my concentration at very poor level. In this mean year just for part time I start marketing and that completely diverted my mind from science, specially for maths, "I couldn't passed maths 1 and maths 2 in the regular 4 attempts", Now I feel very nervous about my engineering. My train is structed at this maths station. I also lost all my funds that my G.P saves for me in one fake investment. I am not in position to pay for my classes and evan for buying books. I have a loan of 17000/-Rs on my head.

Anyhow I have decided to face this situation with positive mind. I am very egocentric person, 80% thoughts that come in my mind are on my self improvement. I am thinking about going for arts or law and after that pursue U.P.S.C exams because my mind is completely diverted towards business and my inner mind is very nervous about it. My situation is like "Jana tha japan pohonch gaye chin" samajh gaye na. Please guide me. Thank you.
Answer: First of all, you have a serious problem, and the best part is you want to solve it. You are right, ambitions may be pegged very high due to family circumstances. Also, you may have ignored hard work due to family status.

You need to tackle your problems one by one. First one is maths. You will have to go back to your fundamentals of 10th 11th and 12th as they are the foundations for understanding maths. It's a peculiar situation you are in. Maths in Engineering is very tough if your fundas are not clear. You may take tution from some one who will explain to you all the fundamentals as stated earlier. Six months to a year 's effort will put you back on rails. There is no shortcut actually if engineering is your obsession.

You should take an IQ test and meet a professional counselor for your concentration problem. If you will not understand some things, obviously, there will be no concentration. Take some therapy if required.

As far as doing Law is concerned, it's diagonally opposite where you are sitting right now. If you have an engineering bent of mind, irrespective of marks, Law may not be a good choice. It is unfortunate to have lost your money in an unwise investment. I can imagine your environment and a bubble that existed around your mind that never let your feet come to ground and that's why you could not identify the risks, or even if you had identified the risks, you were hellbound to take that risk for a future unknown, and soon you were grounded. Nothing lost yet. You have your hands and mind in tact.

I suggest you should take tutions. Teaching is a noble profession, and is paying also. This will reduce your financial burden. Better late than never. I am sure by drastically changing what you do, will drastically change and let you achieve what you could not, so far.

Your counsel.
