Introduction

Sericulture is the art and technology of raising silk worms for production of raw silk yarn. This agro based industry is not limited to just worms, but includes all activities related to them, like mulberry cultivation and even post-cocoon technology. It requires both technical know-how and as well as specialization.

Today China and Japan are two main producers of silk yarn, together producing over 50% of total world production each year.

Sericulture is quite popular in southern India and is now available as course option in Northern India too.

Professionals who undergo proper training can earn starting salaries are as high as Rs 15000/- per month in public sector and even higher in private sector and NGOs.
